Looking for Volunteer Opportunities?

Check these options

Alas, it is autumn, y'all.

Spring has sprung; summer had it's run and now is the season of harvest-- enjoying the fruits of your labor. It's also the perfect time to give back, try something novel, and make a positive move for yourself and others.

New emerging data suggests that volunteering can positively impact health, so why not give it a go?  You're retired! Whether you're passionate about environmental conservation, social justice, or helping those in need, there are many different, fulfilling ways to volunteer.

According to a 2018 statistic, more Americans are volunteering every day. In fact, baby boomers are giving more than 2.2 billion service hours, more than any other age group.

Positive outcomes of volunteerism for those newly retired are:

  1. getting out of the house and away from daytime TV/scrolling social media all day
  2. staying active and socially engaged
  3. building feelings of purpose and belonging in your life
  4. cultivating happiness
So, if you've retired and are seeking meaningful ways to make a difference this year, consider exploring volunteer opportunities tailored to your strengths and passions.

Together, let's continue to build a more inclusive and compassionate society for people of all ages.

Here are some volunteer opportunities to consider:

Community Cleanup Events

Join local organizations or environmental groups in organizing or participating in cleanup events. Spend a day outdoors picking up litter, planting trees, or restoring natural habitats to help protect and preserve the environment. Give back to Mother Nature!

Community Garden Maintenance

Volunteer at a community garden to help with planting, weeding, and harvesting fresh produce. Not only does this contribute to food security in your community, but it also promotes sustainable agriculture and healthy eating habits. And what better way to get alittle dirty and alot grounded.

Assisting at Homeless Shelters

Spend time volunteering at homeless shelters or soup kitchens, serving meals, organizing donations, or providing companionship to individuals experiencing homelessness. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. I've volunteered at Feed My Starving Children and found it to be quite rewarding.

Volunteer at a Library

Calling all bookworms! Libraries offer diverse opportunities to volunteer and contribute to communities. You could assist with book shelving and organizing events or lead reading groups or computer literacy classes. Surely there's a role suited to your interests and skills. As older, freshly retired adults, volunteering offers a chance to share your love for learning, connect with others, and support literacy. Consider reaching out to your local library.

Older Adult Exercise Classes

Calling my fitness-loving folks! If you enjoy attending exercise classes imagine assisting with older adult exercise classes or wellness programs offered at community centers or senior living homes. You don't need to be a super master professional, just offer gentle yoga, tai chi, or chair exercises that promote physical movements and mobility. Keep it fun and simple!

Older Adult Companionship Programs

There are multitudes of older adults lacking social interactions and support. So, consider joining Older Adult companionship programs that pair volunteers with these older adults in need. Spend quality time engaging, listening to stories, sharing hobbies, or even accompanying them on outings. I can't emphasize how grateful these folks would be for your companionship.

Meals on Wheels Delivery Program

We've all heard of the MOW program. Volunteering with them to deliver nutritious meals to homebound older adults in your community is a vital service ensuring that older adults receive regular meals and some essential social interaction, promoting their health and well-being.

Volunteer at an Animal Shelter

Check into your local shelters for opportunities. Whether walking dogs, Ooooo!, socializing with cats, or assisting with administrative tasks, your contributions improve the well-being of shelter animals. It's a rewarding opportunity and you get to stay active and make a positive impact within the community all while nurturing a love for animals.

Technology Assistance for Older Adults

Volunteer to provide technology assistance and support to older adults who may need help navigating smartphones, computers, or the internet. Empowering older adults with digital literacy skills helps them stay connected and engaged in today's digital world.

Senior Advocacy and Outreach

Get involved in advocacy efforts and outreach programs focused on addressing the needs and rights of older adults in your community. Advocate for senior-friendly policies, raise awareness about elder abuse prevention, or participate in campaigns to promote age-friendly environments.

😊😊

Volunteering not only keeps you socially engaged and physically active but also creates a sense of fulfillment and adds purpose to your life. As you enter your retirement era, consider dedicating your time to volunteering.

Your compassion will impact those affected by your selfless actions.

Glossary of Equity & Inclusion Terms

Knowledge is Power: When We're Informed We're Better People 🤓 Hey Y'all!  Before you scoff and roll your eyes.. Hear me out. During orientation at my new workplace, I was given a glossary of terms to become familiar with. Having not worked anywhere that gave a damn about diversity, equity, or inclusion, let alone spent time during the new employee onboarding process to convey it, I was impressed.  The organization's vision is to be known within the community as a force that's committed to DEI. Yeah, this stuff matters, especially since the majority of the staff and clients are POC, those living with mental health issues or disabilities, veterans, seniors, or a combination of the above. This glossary is a tool to increase your awareness (if you're not familiar with these terms) and to provide common language for us to use in conversations.  〰〰〰〰 Ableism  - The all-encompassing system of discrimination and exclusion of people who live with developmental, medical,...

Part 2: CPI De-Escalation Tips

Hey Y'all, I've been focusing a lot on aggressive and violent behavior, as well as exploring strategies to navigate mental health crises, should you find yourself locked in one. These types of situations can emerge quite unexpectedly, and there aren't official protocols or a magic formula for preventing these high-stress events from happening. There are, however, constructive, positive and humane ways to respond and handle these behaviors. These de-escalation tips from CPI are about support not suppression and about seeing each other with the compassion that each of us want to be seen with. 10 Ways to De-escalate High Stress Situations - Be Empathic and Nonjudgemental- Don't judge or be dismissive of the feelings of the person or people in distress. Remember that their feelings are real, whether or not you think they're justified or not. Respect those feelings, keeping in mind that whatever the person is going through could be the most important event in their life ...

Book Review: We'll Soon Be Home Again

Six Stories of Children Who Watched Europe Descend Into Tyranny Sweden's Most Internationally Renowned Graphic Novel Hey Y'all, In an attempt to switch up from my usual content I'll start doing book reviews once a month. For May, I'm reviewing the graphic novel by Jessica Bab Bonde and Peter Bergting titled  We'll Soon Be Home Again.  It's a haunting but necessary read that shares six real stories of children who survived the Holocaust, each one raw and painful. The illustrations are honest and stark; the storytelling straightforward, which somehow makes it hit even harder. As we watch anti-Blackness, anti-migrant, and all forms of hate rise in today’s America, especially against anyone who isn’t cis, white, or Christian, this book feels urgent. For me it served as a history lesson and a warning... I'm going to be honest, this isn’t an easy read, but it shouldn’t be. Their stories are a moving cry for compassion, as each one is stripped of their possessions ...
